Oil becomes less effective as it ages, and by not getting the engine warm enough, excess moisture that forms in the engine will not be removed, which can lead to shorter engine life. The manual says to wait for the light. The light comes on every 10k miles. If you stick to that you shouldn't have any issues.

My recomendation as a certified mechanic is change the oil and filter every 3000 miles or 3 months whichever comes first if you are using regular conventional oil. If you use a quality synthetic oil you can go 5000 miles or 5 months. Use your 15mm wrench or socket and loosen the drain plug. Unscrew it by hand until oil starts dripping; it is almost out at that point. Keep your hand out of the way and continue unscrewing until it comes out and the oil starts to drain. While waiting for the oil to drain, preload your filter.
